Why Rush Theta Tau?
Some of you visiting this site might be wondering... why should I want to join any fraternity. And if I do decide to join one, why should it be yours?
Good, we want you to know more about us. Hopefully this short FAQ will give you an idea of who we are as a fraternity and as students at GW. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact any of our brothers.
- What is Theta Tau?
- So you're a fraternity? Does that mean if I'm a girl I can't join?
- ...only Engineers? Does that mean you don't do anything social?
- What exactly does it mean to be a Professional Fraternity?
- Okay, now I'm interested. But what is "Rushing"? I've never heard of that before.
- And "Pledging"?
- How do I know whether I will make it?
- I've seen plenty of movies / shows about Fraternity Hazing? Am I going to be Hazed?
- Where can I contact you if I have any other questions?
So you're a fraternity? Does that mean if I'm a girl I can't join?
Absolutely not. We pride outselves on being a co-ed fraternity. We have female as well as male brothers. Yes, it may sound weird to hear our female colleagues to be called "brother," but it is a Fraternity after-all.
...only Engineers? Does that mean you don't do anything social?
Again, this is a very common missconception. While we do take some of the hardest classes that GW offers, we would never be able to do it were it not for the time we get to let loose and have some fun.
What exactly does it mean to be a Professional Fraternity?
Theta Tau prides itself on having a nice balance between its three aspects: Social, Professional, and Service to the Community. Our activites range from resume workshops, to volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, to a good old fashioned House Party.
Okay, now I'm interested. But what is "Rushing"? I've never heard of that before.
Rushing is the fancy term for going to events hosted by a fraternity during the start of a semester. For example, if you go to a Theta Tau party this fall, you would be "Rushing Theta Tau."
And "Pledging"?
After Rush is over (or soon to be over), us Brothers decide who to extend "bids" to. If you receive a bid (you'll know it when you get one), it means we would like to get to know you better, and are inviting you to pledge the fraternity. Pledging is basically a trial semester of being in Theta Tau. You come to meetings, get to know the brothers and alumni, and learn about what it would mean to become a brother for life.
How do I know whether I will make it?
Pledging isn't easy. If you don't think you can devote the time to it (trust me, time should be the least of your worries) then let us know. However, if it's at the point where we want you to Pledge, and you want to Pledge, everything else can be worked out in time.
I've seen plenty of movies / shows about Fraternity Hazing? Am I going to be Hazed?
Again, let me be perfectly clear: There is absolutely NO HAZING in Theta Tau. We strictly forbid it.
